People with disabilities can be empowered through development initiatives by focussing on their skills and talents. Thus, they will be within the mainstream.

Different habits make people, while notions make society. The human race has evolved a long way and has undergone several developments. Making maximum use of science and technology, people could develop miracles for adding comforts and ease to lives.
Therefore, people’s intellect has even developed over the years. Nevertheless, their social mindset is yet to develop at the same rate. In their social lives, people are being guided by the previous-generations set preconceived notions, and this cycle is going on for centuries and is also being continued till today.

Through these preconceived notions, people find and socialise with people “similar” to them. It is partially because of this mindset that a particular part of the society not fitting our preconceived mindset, are kept at a distance from the mainstream society because they are the people with disabilities, due to their shortage of mental or physical capabilities.

But the picture will completely be different when they will be regarded as the “people with specialities”. That is why the NGOs are working to uplift the people with disabilities in India and bring them to the mainstream.

Nevertheless, people with special needs are born with hidden talents, that is to be nurtured and not suppressed or neglected. They rightly deserve the utmost care and love for kindling their hidden talents. Only by expressing these qualities, can people with disabilities become independent and hope to build up a better future.

As they have different and special needs, their capabilities vary between ages. While a child with disabilities needs education, independently doing the daily tasks like tying the shoelaces, being confident with academics and languages, and solving mathematical problems and being updated with art and science; youths and adults need training for earning a livelihood.

The child’s education type must be designed as per the child’s capacity and intellectual level. A planned and methodical education system eventually lead the child to a self–dependent and better future.

Now speaking of the youths and adults with disabilities and special requirements, they need education on earning and sustenance, working in a group, cooperating with others so they become economically independent by doing different jobs. They have to be properly assessed of their skill domain which will prove to be useful for their employment in certain industries. Disabilities do not take down employment chances. By being trained in vocational training, knitting, sewing, baking and software courses — they improve their skills and create their paths to form an economically independent future.

Along with the vocational skills and academics, sports and physical activities also inspire them with recreation and therapeutic benefits. When they are encouraged to display their sporting talents, they set up examples before humanity and boosts the morale of others.

Also, there is a high scope of excelling at various art forms, like painting, dance, art, drama and more. Through these forms, they will feel free to express their joys, hopes, fears and related feelings either by singing or enacting certain lines of a drama.
In dance movements, multifarious activities are involved, along with synchronization among other dancers, non-verbal communication and memorization. Also, along with expressing themselves, they can develop their intellectual capabilities.

NGO staffs relentlessly work towards facilitating opportunities for enabling the people with disabilities to ensure they are in pace with the remaining society. Likewise, an inclusive society can be built up where the people with special needs will be established as the contributing members living lives with dignity and support. So, special focus is given to educational, cultural, technological and economic aspects.
