Is your child differently abled? If yes, then as a parent, are you sure you’re taking care of him/her the right away?

There are many people in India who are parents to children suffering from one or more disabilities, which act as impedances to their performance in school, at home and in the society, at large. Due to lack of awareness and unavailability of the right resources, quite a great number of such kids are not provided with the care that they’re supposed to receive. According to many reputed Indian organisations for persons with disabilities, it is utmost important for parents of children with disabilities to understand that their kids can learn and proliferate, that they too might possess hidden talents that can be recognised only if they get proper training, treatment and love.

Here are some guidelines for parents to follow if they think their children are affected by disability:

Showing Confidence

As a parent of a differently abled child, it is extremely vital to be supportive towards any strength showed by the kid, even if it’s something that might not be valued within a classroom. It could be musical, visual or spatial skills, interpersonal deftness, or something similar.

Having Faith

Never should one lose their mind just because their child with learning disabilities couldn’t secure good scores in their exams. The low and highs can be effective reflectors of the kid’s weaknesses and strengths.

They Are Not Lazy

No, if your child cannot seem to do well in academics and sports, it doesn’t mean that he/she is unmotivated or lazy. Simply working harder is not the solution, but assistive technology along with particular instructions is what’s necessary. Only in this way would grade-appropriate content be accessible.

Supporting Their Passion

Suppose an impaired child is really good with ceramics, then the parents should do everything to support it and help him/her to get better at it. Similarly, if a differently abled kid is a good musician, then that part of him/her should be encouraged. It’s all about supporting that which they are mostly passionate about — be it music, drawing, collecting stuff, etc.

Complimenting Them

Most children with disabilities are generally resourceful and creative in one way or another. Parents must remember this and not miss a single opportunity to compliment or praise even the most minimal efforts. This would act as an efficient booster of confidence for the child.

Thus, if your child is suffering from disabilities, make sure you keep the above mentioned tips in mind.
